Washington, D.C. — Today, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the appointment of former Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA) as U.S. special envoy to Sudan. Perriello is a former president of the Center for American Progress Action Fund and has also served as special envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The Biden administration has chosen a formidable advocate with a strong track record of working on peace and justice issues in Africa to help bring an end to the catastrophic war in Sudan. Tom has extensive experience working on conflict resolution and democratic transitions on the continent and other regions. He is a true leader who has also helped launch and lead many nonprofits, promoting inventive ideas and working for human rights, poverty reduction, and sustainability. I know he will bring immense talent and determination to this role.
