Washington, D.C. — Today, President Barack Obama announced a strategy to degrade and defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS, which continues to threaten American citizens and facilities in Iraq and the civilian populations of both Iraq and Syria. In response, Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
President Obama’s announcement of a reinvigorated strategy to degrade and defeat ISIS on both sides of the Iraqi-Syrian border is a crucial step to stabilize the heart of the Middle East. For the United States to be successful it must lead a multifaceted approach that includes not only military action, but also cooperation from the international community and buy-in from major regional actors. Defeating ISIS requires a long-term strategy, and we will be more effective acting with partners.
