STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden Lauds Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s Historic Career

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), announced plans to retire from Congress:

There are few leaders who have had such an impact on so many issues—from health care to the environment to individual rights—and millions of Americans’ lives have been improved because of Nancy Pelosi’s service. She is one of the greatest public servants of my lifetime, a master strategist whose remarkable command of the House led to passage of the Affordable Care Act and legislation that rescued our country from multiple financial crises.

Her courageous leadership is an inspiration to me personally, as well as to countless women and girls who have broken historic barriers to success. Her lifetime of service is an inspiration that has made our country stronger.
