STATEMENT: CAP’s Merici Vinton Praises New York City’s Public Interest Technology Crew

Washington, D.C. – Today, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Chief Technology Officer and Commissioner of the Office of Technology and Innovation Lisa Gelobter announced the launch of a “Public Interest Technology Crew,” an initiative that will deploy teams of technology experts alongside city agencies to tackle public problems with in-house digital solutions. In response, Merici Vinton, a senior fellow for government delivery at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This ambitious move shows that New York City’s leaders are committed to building responsive, easy-to-use government services. Hopefully, this will be a model for cities, counties, and states across the country. I encourage them to tackle the impossible projects; nobody thought free tax filing was possible, but an in-house government team in the Biden administration made Direct File happen. They should work to set high standards for improving government efficiency.
