STATEMENT: CAP’s Julia Gordon on Rep. Mel Watt’s Nomination to Lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Barack Obama will announce his nomination of Rep. Mel Watt (D-NC) as the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Julia Gordon, Director of Housing Finance and Policy for the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:

Mel Watt is a strong choice for this extremely important leadership position.  He’s a knowledgeable, thoughtful public servant with a proven commitment to ensuring broad access to the sustainable credit needed to support a strong middle class and a thriving economy.  Mr. Watt will offer a forward-thinking vision for the agency and will work with Congress to develop a retooled housing finance  system that offers liquidity, stability, transparency, affordability, and protection of taxpayers and consumers.
