Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden administration announced the 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) that commits to 61–66 percent economywide greenhouse gas reductions below 2005 levels by 2035 and methane reductions of at least 35 percent from 2005 levels by 2035. All countries party to the Paris Agreement are required to submit updated NDCs by February 2025. Frances Colón, senior director and team leader for International Climate Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The Biden administration is fulfilling the responsibility of the United States as a global climate leader by setting an ambitious 2035 target for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. This bold new target builds on a foundation of transformational investments in clean energy, climate resilience, and federal action to reduce pollution. These efforts have already created jobs and made communities healthier and safer, showing that economic growth and environmental leadership can go hand in hand.
The announcement underscores the unstoppable momentum of the clean energy transition and shows what the United States is capable of. Establishing this target puts vital information in the hands of decision-makers across all sectors and levels of government who will be instrumental in translating this ambitious goal into actionable change on the ground. It also reminds the United States’ global partners and competitors that our pledge to meet net-zero goals by 2050 lives on stronger than ever, carried forward by U.S. governors, mayors, business leaders, innovators, and community leaders.
