STATEMENT: CAP’s Carmel Martin on New York’s CCSS-Aligned Assessment Results
Washington, D.C. — Today, New York state announced the test results of the state’s newly adopted Common Core State Standards. In response to the release of these scores, Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
New York state’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards, or CCSS, reflects a strong commitment to student success. These new college- and career-ready standards were developed by states through a collaboration with teachers, higher-education faculty, and business leaders. New state assessments reflect a higher bar for students that will initially be more difficult to pass, but will ultimately provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in the global economy. Lower scores on the new assessment reflect a new and more rigorous baseline of achievement. New York has worked to ensure that students, teachers, and schools are not penalized by this transition. Transitions are difficult, but New York should retain its high expectations for all its students.
