Washington, D.C. — Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, today applauded the appointment of John King, the current state education commissioner in New York, to serve as senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Education. Previously, Martin served as assistant secretary for planning, evaluation, and policy development at the department.
The appointment of John King to serve as senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Education is a loss for New York but a gain for the department and for the country. John’s commitment to providing a quality education to all students, especially those who are traditionally underserved and disadvantaged, will be an asset to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as the administration carries out its mission of ensuring a high-quality education for all students. I am pleased to congratulate John on his appointment and am thrilled that he will bring his unique brand of leadership to Washington.
