STATEMENT: CAP’s Browner on Resignation of EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson

Washington, D.C. — Today as the Environmental Protection Agency confirmed that EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson will step down early next year, the Center for American Progress released the following statement from CAP Distinguished Senior Fellow Carol M. Browner, former EPA Administrator and former director of the White House office of Energy and Climate Change Policy:

Lisa Jackson has provided strong leadership at the EPA during a tumultuous period characterized by partisan gridlock.  The agency will miss her leadership and devotion to protecting public health.

Lisa directed several successes at EPA including new standards for clean cars and fuel efficiency, new protections against dangerous mercury pollution and proposed standards to limit carbon pollution from new power plants.

The president has said we have an obligation to future generations to address climate change.  Lisa began that difficult work. President Obama should appoint a new EPA administrator that will continue that work to find smart solutions to reduce carbon pollution and address climate change.
