STATEMENT: CAP’s Brown on Death of Education Leader, Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ)

Washington, D.C. — Today Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), a senior member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, died at the age of 77. He served 12 terms in Congress and was the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. Cynthia G. Brown, Vice President for Education Policy, issued the following statement:

Congressman Payne was a tireless advocate for improving the educational outcomes of our nation’s students. He was a champion for increasing learning time, improving the skills of principals, engaging parents in education, and transforming neighborhoods to support the wellbeing of all children. His commitment and his leadership will be dearly missed.
