Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Virginia to move forward with its last-minute purge of more than 1,600 people from voter rolls. In response, Ben Olinsky, senior vice president for Structural Reform and Governance at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This extreme, anti-voter decision comes from the same far-right justices who have continually overturned years of legal precedent and sold out the American people to fit their own agenda. Make no mistake, this is a perversion of the law that rubber-stamps an effort to strip voters of the freedom to choose their elected leaders. This decision will further divide Americans, sowing doubt into our election system and laying the groundwork for the far right to replace the will of the people with its own agenda. But Virginia voters should not let these attacks discourage them from making their voices heard in this election.
Virginia voters should check their voter registration status as soon as possible with the Virginia Department of Elections. If eligible, Virginia residents who are not registered can register to vote in person at their local polling place and cast a provisional ballot.
