STATEMENT: CAP’s Arkadi Gerney on the Failure of Gohmert Amendment to Override Military on Gun-Carry Rules on Bases

Washington, D.C. – Today, Arkadi Gerney, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress issued the following statement after the Gohmert Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015 (H.R. 4435) was pulled from consideration on the floor of the House of Representatives last night. The amendment would have overridden military leadership and mandated expanded gun carrying on military bases:

Last night, Rep. Louie Gohmert’s (R-TX) reckless and irresponsible amendment to override our country’s military leadership to enable more gun carrying on military bases died on the floor the House of Representatives. Too often, our active duty soldiers have become targets for attackers with guns. We ought to be listening to our military commanders on how to make soldiers safer, not trying to score political points by offering ideological amendments with no hearings or debate. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA), Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-WA), and the other cooler heads in the House of Representatives showed leadership in prevailing upon Rep. Gohmert to withdraw his dangerous amendment.
