Washington, D.C. — In response to President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would ban reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This move by President Trump is yet another brazen attack on the First Amendment and freedom of the press. He is banishing these news organizations from the White House simply because he does not like what they are reporting. Fundamental to the First Amendment and free speech is that speech critical of the government and its policies are protected. These news outlets are exercising their constitutional rights with honesty and integrity, and they must be allowed to do so free from illegal government interference. We stand with these news organizations as they fight these arbitrary and unlawful restrictions. And we hope all those who claim to care about free speech will stand up as well.
