Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement today after the announcement from U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping providing a shared vision for the Paris climate talks and commitments to meet domestic climate goals.
Today’s announcement demonstrates once again that the United States and China can translate strong domestic action into global leadership by acting together to address carbon pollution and promote clean energy growth at home and around the world. In addition to the important actions announced by China that establish a nationwide cap-and-trade system, green power sector reforms, and other policies, I welcome its commitment of $3.1 billion to help poorer countries meet the climate challenge. I urge the U.S. Congress to similarly back the Obama administration’s efforts to be a global leader in climate finance, including by meeting our commitments to the Green Climate Fund.
