STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on the Passing of Sarah Brady

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement after the passing of Sarah Brady, leader in the movement for stronger gun laws and spouse of former White House Press Secretary James Brady, today:

Life is fragile, contingent, and short. Jim and Sarah Brady understood that. After a crazed shooter forever changed their lives in 1981, they had every right to recede into a life focused on their own needs. But they didn’t.

Over more than three decades, Sarah Brady and her husband dedicated themselves to doing more to keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people. We know that the law that bears their name has prevented gun sales to more than 2 million felons, domestic abusers, and people with serious mental illnesses. We’ll never know exactly how many lives Sarah Brady saved, but we do know that hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of people are alive today because of Sarah Brady’s lifesaving work.
