Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement after the unveiling of the the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan—an ambitious and critical set of policies aimed at mitigating climate change and dramatically improving public health.
Climate change isn’t tomorrow’s problem. The actions we take today will determine whether we protect future generations from the potentially catastrophic consequences of a warming world. By finalizing the Clean Power Plan, President Obama has taken the single most important and ambitious action in U.S. history to cut the pollution that drives climate change. The Clean Power Plan also presents tremendous opportunities to create jobs by building a 21st century clean energy economy; to protect the health of communities living near polluting power plants; to reduce household power bills; and to demonstrate global leadership in the climate fight. I applaud President Barack Obama and EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy for delivering this critical policy to the American people.
