STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on Designation of San Gabriel Mountains National Monument

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement after the announcement today that the Obama administration will create the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in Los Angeles, California. This is the Obama administration’s 13th such designation and comes on the heels of last month’s designation of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

“With the creation of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, President Barack Obama is taking a giant step toward creating a more inclusive and accessible system of parks and monuments for our nation,” said Tanden. “With the potential to serve 17 million Americans, never has a new monument served so many families with such varied and close-to-home opportunities to get outdoors. This designation will not only help safeguard clean water for Los Angeles, but it also will spur recreation, tourism, and jobs in the many industries that benefit from protected public lands.”
