STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on 2.5 Million Americans Enrolled in Federal Health Care Marketplace in the Past Four Weeks

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement after the Obama administration announced today that nearly 2.5 million Americans signed up for health care in the federal marketplace during the first four weeks of the current open enrollment period:

Today’s announcement—that so far during this open enrollment period, nearly 2.5 million people have selected a plan in the federal marketplace— is more evidence that the Affordable Care Act is working to provide quality, affordable health coverage for everyone. This week’s figure is much higher than in previous weeks, showing a growing momentum and that the Department of Health and Human Services is on pace to reach its target of 9 million Americans enrolled. It is also a reminder of what is at stake in the months ahead. At the same time millions of people are shopping for a health plan that fits their needs and budgets, conservatives are plotting how to undo the progress that has been made. Whether it is holding more votes in the House and Senate or trying to use the Supreme Court to do it for them, their goal is the same: to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take away people’s health care. A Congress or Court that chooses to go down that path would put not only these people’s care at risk but their own legitimacy as well.
