Washington, D.C. — Today, on the 9th anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement on climate action,
Frances Colón, senior fellow for International Climate Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The Paris Agreement was an unparalleled act of international cooperation that has served as a meaningful framework for the world to reduce carbon emissions and address the climate crisis. This crisis threatens the very stability of the United States through dangerous heat waves, rising seas, and devastating storms. Over the past four years, the Biden administration has not only put our country on track to meet its Paris Agreement commitments, but it has also increased our ambition through historic clean energy investments.
These investments are creating jobs and stimulating the economy, with the understanding that there is no American dream without prosperous and safe communities. They are also an acknowledgment that this fight cannot be won in isolation, and they reaffirm the United States’ commitment to the cause. In the coming weeks, the Biden administration can build on these wins. It can show that economic growth and environmental success under the Paris Agreement are not mutually exclusive. They go hand in hand.
