STATEMENT: CAP Condemns Pardons and Commutations for Convicted January 6 Insurrectionists

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump issued pardons and commutations for approximately 1,500 people convicted in the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, including those who committed violent attacks against law enforcement officers. In response, Michael Sozan, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

President Donald Trump’s pardons for convicted January 6 insurrectionists are an assault on the rule of law and a violation of the will of the American people. Instead of prioritizing actions to reduce the cost of living and improve law and order, Trump has instead chosen to shamefully reward the worst of his political loyalists for their crimes on that infamous day. This includes convicted felons who stormed the U.S. Capitol building, bludgeoned police officers in uniform, threatened lawmakers’ lives, and tried to stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power.

Today’s pardons send a deplorable signal that our system condones extreme forms of political violence, often spurred by elected leaders hellbent on dismantling necessary guardrails. It is now vital that Americans across the ideological spectrum join forces to build a stronger democracy that serves the nation’s best interests—where governmental institutions meet people’s needs and where we reject politicians who place their own interests above the interests of the people.
