Washington, D.C. — The Civil Rights Act of 1964 transformed the United States by outlawing discrimination and establishing agencies responsible for enforcing laws that prevent and remedy discrimination in the workplace. Yet, the far-right extremist Project 2025 playbook seeks to dismantle bedrock civil rights protections that have advanced equality in America over the past 60 years.
A new column from the Center for American Progress outlines how, if enacted, the far-right agenda would allow the federal government to effectively sanction injustice and lead to a resurgence of discrimination in public places. It would do so by turning back the clock on several vital tools that are used to protect Americans from discrimination, such as:
- Removing federal civil protections for millions of Americans
- Weaponizing civil rights law and the U.S. Department of Justice
- Eliminating protections against discrimination for workers
- Eradicating disparate impact
- Perpetuating sex discrimination
- Elevating the nuclear family model at the expense of all others
- Establishing bans on demographic data collection
“The far right has long championed policies that restrict the government’s ability to combat discrimination,” said William Roberts, senior vice president of Rights and Justice at CAP. “Project 2025 is the latest scheme to smash the bedrock protections Americans have relied upon for decades and make it far more likely that millions of Americans will face discrimination in everyday life based on their age, race, gender, disability status, or other characteristics. Project 2025 must be stopped to protect all Americans from government-sanctioned discrimination.”
