RELEASE: Patrick Murphy, David Miliband, and Glen S. Fukushima Join CAP’s National Security and International Policy Team

Washington, D.C. — Today Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, announced that former Congressman Patrick Murphy, the Right Honorable David Miliband, and president and former chairman and director of Airbus Japan K.K. Glen S. Fukushima will be joining CAP’s National Security and International Policy team.

“The arrival of Patrick Murphy, David Miliband, and Glen Fukushima marks a wave of new critical thinkers with high-level experience in politics, foreign policy, and trade to our institution,” said Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress. “Their diverse professional backgrounds and proven ability to handle complex foreign policy and international trade situations will ensure that the Center for American Progress continues to bring innovative ideas to a global audience.”

David Miliband is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, where his work focuses on foreign and security policy, global competitiveness, and oceans and coastal communities. Miliband is the former British foreign secretary and will be based in the United Kingdom where he remains a British Labour Party politician, currently serving his constituents in South Shields as a member of Parliament. Miliband has held several offices in the British Cabinet. In May 2005 David became minister of state for communities and local government where he created the idea of city regions. He then acted as secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs where he spearheaded the Climate Change Bill, which set the world’s first legally binding framework for cutting emissions. From 2007 to 2010 Miliband served as secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs, the youngest foreign secretary in 30 years. As foreign secretary, Miliband stood up for human rights, advanced British interests in Europe, and established a clear British voice on the key global conflicts of the day.

Patrick Murphy is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. Building upon his congressional career, Murphy will continue to focus on enhancing our national security and supporting military families, making government more efficient for the American taxpayer, and leveling the playing field of LGBT Americans and their families. As the first Iraq war veteran elected to Congress, representing Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, Murphy served on the House Committee on Appropriations, House Armed Services Committee, and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He was also the author and chief sponsor of the bill repealing the Defense Department’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy concerning gay service members.

Glen S. Fukushima is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, where his work will focus on U.S.-Japan relations, U.S. foreign policy in East Asia, and international trade. Fukushima previously worked as the senior vice president of Airbus SAS, and chairman and director of Airbus Japan K.K. Fukushima served two presidents at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), where he worked as deputy assistant USTR for Japan and China and director for Japanese affairs. He is credited with opening Japanese markets up to U.S. exports during his time at the USTR. After leaving government, Fukushima served as president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. Fukushima is a published author in both English and Japanese on topics ranging from political economy to international law.
