Washington, D.C. — Lawrence H. Summers, the Charles W. Eliot professor at Harvard University, joined CAP President and CEO Patrick Gaspard in a discussion about how threats to IRS funding endanger America’s fiscal future. Summers said, “Effectively administering taxes is at the very center of our government.”
Summers made a plea for funding for the IRS: “I think we all love our country, and if we all love our country, we need our government to be able to function. That means being able to collect taxes. As Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes famously said, ‘Taxes are the price we pay for civilized society.’”
