Washington, D.C. — With multiple criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump and his allies, there is now meaningful progress on holding them accountable for their wide-ranging plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election. These court proceedings, as well as related convictions of individual insurrectionists, help send a signal that no one can be above the law in a fully functioning democracy.
Unfortunately, there has been no accountability for lawmakers such as Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) despite their leading roles in trying to overturn valid election results and defying congressional subpoenas. Jordan is shockingly now a frontrunner to replace McCarthy as speaker of the House.
A new report from the Center for American Progress updates the legal progress and discusses:
- Relevant criminal proceedings involving Trump, as well as updates on efforts to disqualify Trump and others from holding office under the 14th Amendment
- Disciplinary proceedings against Trump’s top attorneys
- Convictions of individuals who rioted in the January 6 insurrection
- Ongoing investigations or proceedings in states
- The lack of accountability for former Speaker McCarthy, Rep. Jordan, and other lawmakers who the January 6th Committee singled out for punishment
“No one is above the law in a strong democracy, not even a former president,” said Michael Sozan, a senior fellow at CAP and author of the report. “With the guardrails of democracy being severely tested, these efforts to hold Trump and his allies accountable are critical to sending that message. That’s especially true as Trump continues to use extreme and violent political rhetoric. But it’s unacceptable that Jim Jordan, who allegedly played a pivotal part in helping Trump plan to overturn the election and later defied a congressional subpoena for testimony, is a leading contender for House speaker.”
The report notes that Rep. Jordan has escaped all accountability, even though he allegedly played a key role in planning—directly with Trump and other officials—how to overturn the election results, asked for a pardon for members of Congress who were involved in the plot, and defied a congressional subpoena for testimony into his actions.
