Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress announced that Kevin Metz has been named general counsel of the organization.
Metz joined CAP as deputy general counsel in 2024 after almost 25 years at Latham & Watkins LLP, where he was a partner in its litigation and trial department and focused on corporate governance litigation, internal and government investigations, and political law issues.
While at Latham, Metz had an active pro bono practice in civil rights litigation and led a team that was awarded the firm’s top prize for public service in 2021. He also served on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, Ayuda, and Alive!
“Kevin’s legal guidance and strategic thinking have helped CAP lead in this critical moment for the country,” said Neera Tanden, CAP’s president and CEO. “I’m thrilled that he will serve the institution in this position.”
Metz is a graduate of Northwestern University and Yale Law School. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Michael S. Kanne on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. Before his legal career, he spent five years as a political reporter at The Tampa Tribune.
