Press Release

Washington, D.C. — The upcoming G7 summit in Italy represents more than just another leaders’ forum—it’s a critical opportunity to reinforce democratic values and restore trust in international institutions through decisive action.

A new column from the Center for American Progress highlights five critical priorities the G7 should address at the summit this week:

  • Agree to a plan that would use the interest from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine defend itself from Russian aggression.
  • Focus and coordinate food security efforts by scaling up successful programs.
  • Support a proposed ceasefire proposal and chart a path to Israeli-Palestinian security and peace.
  • Lay the groundwork for COP29 by setting a new climate finance target.
  • Make multilateral institutions work for all through commitment to reform and debt relief.

“The G7 summit is a pivotal opportunity for the world’s leading democracies to tackle pressing global challenges,” said Allison McManus, managing director for the National Security and International Policy department at CAP and co-author of the column. “Addressing these priorities will go a long way toward paving the way for a more secure, prosperous, and democratic future.”
