Washington, D.C. — On June 25, 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law—the first significant federal gun safety bill in nearly 30 years. This bill is both historic and unexpected in all that it accomplishes: It incentivizes states to implement extreme risk protection orders; closes the so-called “boyfriend loophole”; and funds community violence intervention programs, mental health services, and supportive services in schools.
Please join the Center for American Progress for a discussion with Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) on his key leadership role in passing this lifesaving legislation. Critically, the discussion will examine how the strategy that garnered such broad support for meaningful compromise on gun control might inform the work ahead on other seemingly intractable challenges in this tenuous moment for U.S. democracy.
