Washington, D.C. – Independent agencies play a critically important role in helping protect Americans’ health, safety, and prosperity. For decades, laws passed by Congress have purposely shielded independent agencies from day-to-day political interference from presidents and their teams. These laws are buttressed by well-settled Supreme Court precedent that prohibits a president from removing leaders of independent agencies without cause.
Yet, in the past few months, the Trump administration has tried to summarily remove multiple independent agency leaders without cause and has taken other steps to politicize and interfere with the day-to-day functioning of independent agencies. In many cases, agency leaders have sued in federal court to stop their removals and in some cases have been allowed to resume their important work, at least temporarily.
Please join the Center for American Progress for a panel discussion featuring three independent agency leaders whom the president has unlawfully tried to remove. These leaders will discuss the vitally important work their agencies do to help Americans and the dangers of politicizing independent agencies.
