Washington, D.C. — On December 13, the United States and China amended the U.S.-PRC Science and Technology Agreement and extended it for five years. In response, Alan Yu, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This updated agreement is a pragmatic step forward that preserves the framework for American and Chinese scientists to continue to make advances in basic research. At the same time, it protects U.S. competitive interests under its reinforced intellectual property and national security safeguards. The agreement continues to support the principle that scientific progress aligns with our values and national interests. For more than four decades, this agreement has helped spur critical breakthroughs by American and Chinese scientists in areas ranging from childhood nutrition to earthquake preparedness. At a time when global challenges require cooperative solutions, the advances achieved under this agreement highlight the potential for U.S.-China cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.
