American Progress has an immediate opening for a Director or Senior Director of Institutional Giving in its Development department. Reporting to the Managing Director of Institutional Giving, the Director or Senior Director of Institutional Giving will be an important member of the Development department and will help support American Progress’ institutional giving efforts as the organization reimagines its corporate giving program. The Director or Senior Director of Institutional Giving will work closely with senior members of American Progress’ policy departments and the Managing Director of Institutional Giving as well as other senior and executive leaders of the organization to identify and implement American Progress’ corporate giving priorities. This position will also work with current partners to identify meaningful cultivation touchpoints and oversee and manage American Progress’ Business Alliance. They will hold a portfolio of 75 corporate and labor donors, targeting six- to eight-figure prospects. The ideal candidate will have significant experience as a front-line fundraiser, demonstrated success with corporate and foundation solicitations, strong communication skills, and a growth mindset.

The Development department works with program staff at both the Center for American Progress, a 501(c)(3) organization, and the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) organization, to fundraise for support for American Progress’ priorities and bold progressive agenda.
- Implement and socialize a new corporate gift acceptance policy.
- Secure corporate and labor gifts at the five- to eight-figure level.
- Partner with senior leadership in developing and executing strategies to deepen partnerships with corporate and labor partners and to increase the level of funding over time for CAP and CAP Action’s work from corporate sources.
- Develop and manage a portfolio of 75 donors and prospects across corporate and labor channels.
- Liaise with a set of key programmatic staff leading the organization’s institutional priorities and policy departments.
- Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including the organization’s donor database and wealth screening tools.
- Work with the Communications and Events Coordinators to develop Business Alliance correspondence and events.
- Manage one direct report: the Corporate and Labor Relations Manager.
- Work with the Development department to align efforts and set goals.
- Create and implement moves management plans.
- Acknowledge corporate donors through public and private recognition.
- Track and report progress using specific metrics.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or equivalent professional experience is required.
- Minimum of seven to 10 years of relevant work experience—including at least five years of front-line fundraising—working with corporate donors.
- Demonstrated success managing a five- to six-figure portfolio of corporate supporters.
- Demonstrated work experience and donor contacts in mission-aligned areas.
- A proven track record in fundraising from corporations and foundations.
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial ability to develop alliances and coordinate shared interests of all parties.
- Excellent problem-solving skills designed to meet the challenges of the organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with considerable experience in writing and presenting information to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to use data and customer relationship management (CRM) systems to set fundraising strategy and priorities, measure outcomes, and drive superior performance.
- Knowledge of various progressive philanthropic sectors, including racial equity, rights, justice, international affairs, public health, education, or democracy, is desirable.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and prospect research skills.
- Strong interpersonal, mediation, and facilitation skills.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
- Familiarity with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) regulations is a plus.
- Ability to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines and manage workflow.

The minimum salary for the Director position is $100,000, and the minimum salary for the Senior Director position is $125,000.
