This term, the U.S. Supreme Court continued its deeply concerning trend of giving deference to the president over Congress and the judiciary. More cases have been filed on the “shadow docket” this year than in any other past term, and the far right-leaning justices have relied on said docket to overturn lower court rulings enjoining the Trump administration’s potentially illegal and unconstitutional actions—without touching on the merits. The high court has limited the use of nationwide injunctions on executive actions, expanded the ability of religious interests to impose their views on the public at large, eased restrictions on claims of reverse discrimination, restricted medical care for transgender youth, and further opened the courthouse doors to special interests while closing them to everyday Americans.
