American life is unaffordable for too many people and the basics are increasingly out of reach. Take housing: Home prices have risen nearly 55 percent since 2020, while rents are up more than 30 percent nationwide, straining family budgets and putting the dream of homeownership further out of reach for millions of Americans. That’s because the nation has a housing gap of millions of homes—the United States is not building enough to meet demand.
Please join the Center for American Progress for a policy summit featuring Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) on the housing shortage and Senate Democrats’ plans to lower housing costs as part of a larger agenda to make life more affordable for every American. The event will also include a panel of experts to discuss new ideas for tackling the country’s housing challenges. Some of these solutions, informed by CAP’s new housing agenda, would make housing more affordable by providing rental relief, eliminating barriers to building more affordable homes, and protecting consumers from abusive practices in the housing industry.
