The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is affecting every corner of the American economy, workforce, and society. Voters are increasingly concerned about AI’s impact on their jobs and families, while a handful of companies are driving AI relentlessly forward. Yet, too few policymakers are asking how AI can benefit all Americans—or asking how the Trump administration can maintain America’s AI advantage while it is simultaneously dismantling our science and innovation infrastructure by canceling funding and proposing devastating cuts to the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and NASA.
Sen. Mark Kelly is at the forefront of these critical discussions. His new “AI for America” roadmap is the start of a conversation to make AI work for all Americans, not just a wealthy few. At the core of this proposal is a commonsense principle: major tech companies benefiting from the rise of AI should pitch in to an AI Horizon Fund that benefits workers and community infrastructure—which are the very foundations of AI innovation. As a former astronaut, Sen. Kelly has been a leader in the defense of America’s science and innovation ecosystem, including opposing devastating proposed cuts to NASA. He has also been a critical voice in the importance of the rule of law to our domestic and national security in these unprecedented times.
Please join CAP for a conversation with Sen. Kelly, moderated by CAP President and CEO Neera Tanden. It is featured as part of CAP’s series, “What’s Next: Conversations on the Path Forward,” which brings leaders to CAP to offer their perspectives on how to respond to this political moment.
