State Voting Rights Acts: Capstone

This is the final video in the “State Voting Rights Acts: Explained” video series created by the Center for American Progress and the Legal Defense Fund.

Part of a Series

This is the final video in the “State Voting Rights Acts: Explained” video series created by the Center for American Progress and the Legal Defense Fund. In this video, Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL)  delves into how state voting rights acts can fill the gaps left as the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 is being watered down by federal courts. Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) urges Congress to restore the full strength of the federal Voting Rights Act and encourages states to pass their own voting rights legislation. Voting rights experts who appeared throughout this video series detail additional protections state voting rights acts can provide, including increased language access; new, fairer systems such as district-based voting; and stronger protections against voter intimidation. As each state passes a voting rights act, the United States comes closer to the promise of an inclusive, multicultural democracy.

The positions of American Progress, and our policy experts, are independent, and the findings and conclusions presented are those of American Progress alone. American Progress would like to acknowledge the many generous supporters who make our work possible.
