Over the past several decades, economic inequality has rapidly increased in the United States as the incomes of those at the top have grown far faster than the incomes of those at the middle and bottom. One significant contributor to this increase in inequality has been the gradual decline of America’s unions. As the share of workers who are members of a union has declined, so has the share of income going to the middle class. The middle class needs unions to combat growing inequality and fight for family-supporting wages, benefits, and essential workplace protections.
