STATEMENT: CAP’s Patrick Gaspard Congratulates Neera Tanden on Her Appointment as Director of the Domestic Policy Council

Washington, D.C. — Today, the White House announced that Neera Tanden will serve as the next director of the Domestic Policy Council. Tanden played a crucial role in the founding of the Center for American Progress in 2003 and served as its president and CEO from 2011 to 2021. Following the announcement of her appointment, Patrick Gaspard, current president and CEO of CAP, issued the following statement:

In a town where personnel often equals policy, there could not be a better appointment to the Domestic Policy Council than Neera Tanden, a brilliant champion for hard-working Americans who has never forgotten where she comes from. Neera is often praised for her strategic capacity, her deep knowledge base, and her ability to build coalitions. But we should not overlook her values-based leadership that makes her ideal for this role in this make-or-break moment.

As a longtime policy leader who was raised by a single mother, Neera always works to ensure that decisions made in D.C. improve the lives of people far beyond the Beltway. Neera has played an important role in shaping many of the most impactful pieces of legislation of this century, from health care access to investments in our infrastructure. She was, of course, also vital to creating and building CAP and instilling the guiding value of inclusion in our work to strengthen this democracy.

I can think of no one better to lead the Domestic Policy Council than Neera Tanden.
