RELEASE: The Inflation Reduction Act Asserts America’s Role as a Global Climate Leader

Washington, D.C. — The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act is a significant feat of the Biden administration that will drive global climate action, according to a new column from the Center for American Progress that urges for continued measures to help meet international climate goals.

After decades of inconsistent global climate leadership, the Inflation Reduction Act will put the United States on track to reach its emission reduction commitments under the Paris Agreement, boost its economic and trade standing by investing in clean energy manufacturing, improve the national security landscape by reducing reliance on foreign fossil fuels and anti-democratic countries, and restore U.S. credibility internationally on climate commitments.

Going forward, the column recommends building on the momentum of the Inflation Reduction Act by meeting international climate finance pledges, addressing the issue of loss and damage, closing the adaptation gap, delivering on international clean energy partnerships, and prioritizing climate justice priorities in international climate policy strategy.

“The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act provides a road map that other countries can use to achieve their own emission reduction ambitions,” said Frances Colón, senior director of International Climate Policy at CAP and co-author of the column. “By also delivering on the issues of climate finance, loss and damage, adaptation, Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JET-Ps), and international climate justice, the United States will strengthen its position as a global climate leader.”
