Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 3755), a bill that would help ensure that every person is free to make the best health care decisions for themselves, their families, and their lives, regardless of who they are or where they are from. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
A strong majority of Americans support the legal right to abortion, and we applaud the senators who voted in line with the public’s will to protect those rights on the federal level.
It is impossible to overstate the threat that the Supreme Court poses to the promise of Roe v. Wade, especially for those from marginalized communities who already face insurmountable barriers to quality health care. But Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s decision to bring forward the bill is an important reminder that legislators can—and must—act to safeguard every person’s ability to access abortion care.
In the months and years ahead, it will be vital to continue to push forward proactive measures that ensure every person can make critical, deeply personal decisions about their futures and families. We urge policymakers to safeguard abortion rights and access at all levels of government.
