STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden Cheers News of $100 Million Grant from U.S. Department of Labor to Expand Apprenticeships

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden today applauded the news of a new $100 million grant competition from the Obama administration to expand apprenticeship programs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, or DOL, the American Apprenticeships Grants will enable partnerships between employers, labor, training providers, and local governments to create new apprenticeships in high-growth fields.

These grants will help businesses build a pipeline of skilled talent and connect young Americans to high-paying jobs and debt-free education. This historic investment will expand apprenticeships into new, high-growth fields such as information technology, health care, and advanced manufacturing. Millions of young people around the world enter great careers through apprenticeship, and these grants will create more of those opportunities in the United States.
