Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden issued the following statement regarding the announcement that today, President Barack Obama will designate three new national monuments: Browns Canyon in Colorado, the Pullman Historic District in Illinois, and the Honouliuli Internment Camp in Hawaii. These are the Obama administration’s 14th, 15th, and 16th such designations. The administration also announced the “Every Kid in a Park” initiative to help give every fourth-grade student in America the opportunity to visit a national park.
By acting on the long-standing visions of local communities in Illinois, Hawaii, and Colorado, President Obama is building a system of parks and monuments that is more inclusive and accessible to all. The president’s proposal to help more young people experience the wonders of the outdoors is also a clear reminder of the need to expand access to outdoor opportunities for every American, both through the creation of local parks and the protection of our wildest and most remote treasures.
