Washington, D.C. — Today, President Barack Obama continued his streak of negotiating strong bilateral and multilateral climate agreements by committing with the five Nordic leaders to new steps to curb global warming and safeguard the Arctic. Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Cathleen Kelly issued the following statement:
The U.S.-Nordic joint climate statement is the latest in a series of bold climate agreements secured by President Obama. With today’s announcement, the president and the Nordic leaders committed to implement the Paris climate agreement. They also committed to use world-class standards for approving Arctic commercial activity, curb methane pollution from oil and gas operations and other sources, accelerate renewable energy development—including offshore wind—and use public financing to leverage more private investment in low-carbon and resilient development. These substantial commitments will help inspire more ambitious climate action globally and move the world closer to averting dangerous Arctic tipping points and curbing global warming.
