STATEMENT: CAP’s Greg Dotson on the Entry Into Force of the Paris Agreement

Washington, D.C. — Greg Dotson, the Vice President for Energy Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after the Paris Agreement reached the threshold to trigger its entry into force:

Today, the Paris Agreement reached a significant milestone. The pact has crossed the threshold that triggers the 30-day countdown to its entry into force: 55 nations representing 55 percent of global greenhouse gas pollution have now formally joined the agreement.

This wave of support from countries around the world—including the United States, China, Mexico, India, Brazil, and many others—demonstrates the tremendous dedication within the international community to address climate change.

The promise of the Paris Agreement lies in the fact that it creates a durable framework for global action in which every country makes improved climate commitments going forward. The pact is critical for the communities, ecosystems, and economies in the United States and abroad that are threatened by climate change.
