STATEMENT: CAP’s Michael Sozan Praises Bipartisan Secure Elections Act

Washington, D.C. — Michael Sozan, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement praising the Secure Elections Act, bipartisan legislation led by Sens. James Lankford (R-OK), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and cosponsored by Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM), among others.

Free and fair elections are foundational to our nation’s democratic system—and an important matter of national security. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and James Lankford, along with several of their Senate colleagues, have demonstrated bipartisan leadership by filing new legislation to help secure our nation’s election infrastructure. During 2016, Russia took unprecedented steps to disrupt our presidential election, including attempting to breach election systems in approximately 21 states. National security officials have warned us that Russia will attempt to interfere in our elections again. With the 2018 midterm elections less than a year away, Congress must act now to provide the necessary funds to states to secure their election infrastructure.
