STATEMENT: 5 Years After the Paris Climate Agreement, the Need for Climate Action Is Stronger Than Ever, Says John Podesta

Washington, D.C. — On Saturday, the world will mark “Paris+5,” the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Paris climate agreement. To mark this day and the need for further ambitious action, Center for American Progress Founder John Podesta released the following statement:

In these past five years, U.S. states, cities, local governments, businesses, and universities have stepped up and worked to build a future with a safe, livable climate. In President-elect Joe Biden they will gain an ally and a leader who knows that climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our world, through dangerous heat waves, rising seas, and devastating storms. The American people know that we need to act to avert our climate crisis, and that’s why we look forward to President-elect Biden declaring on the first day of his administration that the United States will return to Paris and take up the mantle of climate leadership with a plan to rebuild from the COVID-19 crisis with a just and clean economy that will support millions of good-paying jobs, and a goal of 100 percent clean electricity by 2035.
