STATEMENT: Pete Buttigieg Will Shepherd US Department of Transportation Into a New Era

Washington, D.C. — Today, President-elect Joe Biden announced that he will nominate former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg to be the next secretary of transportation. Following the announcement, Mara Rudman, executive vice president for Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Mayor Buttigieg is an inspiring leader and consensus builder. His experience as mayor of South Bend has given him unique insight into the real-world impact of federal transportation policy in communities across the country. Mayor Buttigieg understands the need to make deep progress on climate change and leverage infrastructure expenditures to advance sustainable, equitable, and inclusive economic growth. If confirmed, Mayor Buttigieg will also make history as the first Senate-confirmed openly LGBTQ American to serve in the Cabinet. Mayor Buttigieg is an excellent choice to shepherd the Department of Transportation into a new era.
