Restoring Social Trust in Democracy
Washington, D.C. — Today, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement in response to the killing of two people in Minnesota by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents:
The Trump administration’s ICE and Border Patrol have now killed two American citizens in Minnesota. The senseless deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, and the related violence perpetrated by Trump’s Homeland Security Department, are unconscionable and unconstitutional. President Trump must pull ICE and Border Patrol agents out of Minneapolis immediately and fire Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. She directly lied to the American people about these killings, has overseen an agency that is endangering Americans, and is interfering with local police efforts to keep communities safe. Noem is absolutely unfit to lead an agency tasked with keeping Americans safe. She bears responsibility for the agents under her command who killed two people and should face the consequences. Every member of Congress should be asking why she’s still in her job. Every minute she remains in office, Americans are less safe.
