Restoring Social Trust in Democracy
Washington, D.C. — According to published reports, six career prosecutors in the Minneapolis U.S. attorney’s office resigned due to pressure they faced from the Justice Department to investigate the widow of Renee Good—the woman who was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer—rather the shooter. In response, Ben Olinsky, senior vice president of Structural Reform and Governance at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
These brave attorneys are sending a clear message that the Trump administration is acting with complete disregard for the law. They are refusing to participate in a politically motivated witch hunt against the widow of a woman gunned down by a federal agent. And they are taking a bold stand against the Justice Department’s decision not to investigate whether the agent’s actions violated the law. The integrity and decency of these attorneys is a stark contrast to the utter lack of integrity and decency shown by President Donald Trump’s Justice Department.
