Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest jobs report for August 2025. The report found that the U.S. economy under President Donald Trump added just 22,000 jobs last month and the national unemployment rate has increased to 4.3 percent. In response, Emily Gee, senior vice president for Inclusive Growth at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This is the weakest job market Americans have seen in four years. We’re seeing the consequences of Trump’s self-defeating tariffs and big budget bill, which are fueling uncertainty and hitting industries from manufacturing to retail. At the same time, costs continue to increase, with more than 2 in 3 Americans anticipating that prices will continue to rise in the months ahead. Taken together, the president has created a perfect storm for the U.S. economy, pushing consumers and businesses to sit on the sidelines and hope that they can ride out the turbulence. Congress must take immediate action to rein in the damage the president is inflicting on the American people.
