STATEMENT: Trump’s Effort To Humiliate Zelenskyy Makes a Mockery of U.S. Foreign Policy

Washington, D.C. — Following a contentious meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, Allison McManus, managing director for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

No American president has done more to kowtow to Vladimir Putin than Donald Trump did today. Trump once again made a mockery of his role as the leader of the free world today. He tried and failed to humiliate Zelenskyy, a hero fighting for his nation against Putin’s brutal aggression. While claiming to work for peace, he is helping Russia win a war after invading a sovereign country. We should not forget that Russia’s ballistic missiles are still pointed at American cities.
