Washington, D.C. — Today, the White House announced that several key offices within the U.S. Department of Education are being reorganized into other federal agencies.
In response, Jared Bass, senior vice president of Education at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This is yet another example of the Trump administration attempting to circumvent the law to advance an agenda that will hurt students and the quality of their education. Only Congress holds the power to eliminate the Department of Education. But office by office, program by program, layoff by layoff, this administration keeps trying to undermine that authority.
Without congressional approval, this action will move the administration of critical programs—programs that support students and teachers, bolster HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions, and help students from underrepresented backgrounds earn a college degree—to other agencies, most with little to no operational knowledge. This is a disservice to tens of millions of American students and families and threatens the vitality of our public education system.
